First Birth; The midwife was amazed as I was so calm...

We started our hypnobirthing sessions with Julia at 20 weeks and I am so glad we did! The techniques we learnt were not only amazing in labour, but in pregnancy to help me feel more relaxed too, I still listen to the tracks now if struggling to sleep. I went into labour on the Friday evening, surges started and I had a relaxing bath to help me settle for bed. Ben set up my candles and I listened to my relax with nature track and my affirmations. The surges then stopped and didn’t restart until 6pm the following day. Ben was then doing my soothing strokes as I bounced on my ball, we went to bed and listened to a track.

I was unable to get to sleep so I went downstairs and used my waves of relaxation and went to my relaxing place, my cottage by the sea. At 3am the surges were 2 minutes apart, I called Ben to head to the hospital. I must have been relaxed as he asked if I wanted to come back to bed to do our script! We arrived at the hospital at 4am or so, the midwife put us into a bed but said it was likely we would go home as I was only in the early signs of labour from the looks of it.

At 04:30 her colleague examined me and I was 10cm, fully dilated! The midwife was amazed as I was so calm, I explained how we had completed this amazing course. They took me to the delivery suite and I met my midwife who was incredible. As I was high risk they weren’t going to allow a water birth which was my dream birth, thankfully myself and

Julia had discussed this and I advocated for myself and was allowed this birth. We got into the pool at around 5am, the surges were strong at this point and I knew it wouldn’t be long until we met our little man. I kept on moving in the pool to find the most comfortable positions, remembering upright and forward as we had learnt. We had my affirmations on at first, the relax with nature track then as this was my favourite and Ben was holding my hand throughout.

In between surges I preferred to be on my back, so there was lots of splashing! Little man arrived at 6am on the dot, no cries, he was so relaxed. We stayed together cord attached in the pool for 30 minutes and it was surreal. I couldn’t believe how calm he was and I felt like a superhero! It was truly an empowering experience, I’m so glad we completed this course and I would recommend it to anyone going forward. I was so scared of birth at the beginning and by the end I was fully relaxed and trusted my body. Thank you Julia!

xx Emma & Ben
